Understanding Erectile Dysfunction
We understand erectile dysfunction (ED) man’s persistent inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual activity within the set of aspects of sexual intercourse, is also known as impotence. It is difficult to know how many people affected by DE, but is estimated to affect over 100 million men, aged between 40 and 70 years, throughout the world. The prevalence of ED was significantly associated with age, with an estimated prevalence of 39% in men aged 40 years, from 48% in 50 years, from 57% in those 60 years and 67% in the 70, approaching a rate of 75% in men 80 years of age, ranging from mild dysfunction in 17% of cases, moderate dysfunction in 25% to a complete dysfunction in 10% of the cases. But be clear that, although its prevalence increases with age, ED is not a natural consequence of aging.
The prevalence of ED varies depending on geographic location, but is independent of ethnicity (not race varies among others).
ED, while not life threatening, have a negative influence on the quality of life, and can be associated with depression, low self-esteem, poor self-image, fear and mental stress, which adversely affect relationships with sexual partners, family and friends, in addition, ED can lead to neglect of social and sexual relationships, causing a deterioration of general health.
WHY IS SUFFERING erectile dysfunction?
The body of the penis, from the anatomical point of view, consists of three elongated cylindrical bodies, ranging from root to tip: two corpora cavernosa, top and side, and a spongy body, inferior and medial, inside which is the urethra and into your mouth. An erection is caused by a blood into the corpora cavernosa due to dilation of the arteries within them, mediated by substances that cause smooth muscle relaxation, among which nitric oxide. During detumescence of the penis, when it returns to the flaccid state, there is emptying of the corpora cavernosa by a contraction of the muscles of the arteries and the corpora cavernosa.
In normal erection involves many psychological, social, neurological, vascular, hormonal, erection can be caused by local sensory stimulation of the genitals (which is what is called reflex erection) and central psychogenic stimuli (central erection) or perceived through the senses or generated by the brain. Also, since the brain can get messages that facilitate or inhibit reflex erection.
The abnormality in one or more of the factors involved in the erection can produce, from the standpoint of etiology, ED can be classified as:
organic, or injury due to abnormal vascular, neurological, hormonal or structural penis.
psychogenic: due to central inhibition (psychological) mechanism of erection without physical injury.
mixed organic-psychogenic: due to a combination of organic and psychogenic factors.
In most patients, erectile dysfunction will occur as a combination of organic and psychogenic components, organic factors, with or without associated psychogenic factors are involved in 78% of men with ED.
